Is it possible to create a school community that includes all of its members? A school community that does not exclude even one person? A place where all children have a sense of belonging, a feeling of happiness, and a place where you are accepted just the way you are? Yes! It is possible for all children, even those with the most significant of disabilities, to be included in their school community. And it is possible to make that happen in a way that actually supports the learning of all children, all together, all the time. Unfortunately, the practice of excluding children with disabilities in our schools has become so ingrained in the thinking of educators, that the exclusion and segregation of students with disabilities has become an acceptable concept. Dr. Jill England will share examples of schools where the concept of segregated programming has been challenged by the community’s own members and where both practices and attitudes are changing.
